Marcel Ciolacu resigns as PSD leader

Marcel Ciolacu has resigned as president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) of Romania. The party's National Political Council convened on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. to discuss his resignation, establish interim leadership, and decide whether to enter the government or move into opposition. This meeting occurs amidst calls for reform and a reevaluation of the party's political strategies, reports Digi24.
On Monday, the PSD leaders held an informal meeting to prepare for the upcoming National Council. During this meeting, Marcel Ciolacu announced that he was resigning from his position as party president. This marks the second time Ciolacu has made such an announcement; the first instance occurred after the first round of the presidential elections in November 2024, when he failed to qualify for the final round of the race.
Names such as Sorin Grindeanu, Daniel Băluţă, Bogdan Ivan, Victor Negrescu, and the possibility of collective leadership have been discussed for the party leadership. According to the party's statute, one of the two first vice presidents—either Grindeanu or Băluţă—should assume interim leadership, although other options are not ruled out.
We remind you that Marcel Ciolacu resigned as Prime Minister immediately following the first round of the presidential elections in Romania.
