Trump names Darryl Nirenberg New U.S. Ambassador to Romania

Darryl Nirenberg, President Donald Trump's nominee for U.S. Ambassador to Bucharest, will undergo several procedural steps before his confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

The nominee is then evaluated during a hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Congress's upper chamber, according to the U.S. Senate website.

Once confirmed, each ambassador serves as the President's personal representative and the chief representative of the United States government in the country or organization to which they are assigned. Ambassadors are part of the U.S. Department of State.

In a message on Truth Social, the U.S. President emphasized that Nirenberg will strengthen bilateral relations with Romania, support military cooperation between the two countries, and promote U.S. economic and security interests abroad. This nomination follows the official announcement of the departure of current Ambassador Kathleen Kavalec.

Darryl Nirenberg was named U.S. Ambassador to Romania following the conclusion of Ambassador Kathleen Kavalec's mission on May 20, 2025.

Nirenberg is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in foreign policy and law. He has over 40 years of experience in foreign policy, including 14 years as a staff member of the U.S. Senate, where he held significant roles such as Counsel to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. In this capacity, he contributed to the development of U.S. policies, particularly concerning relations with Eastern Europe.

At a law firm, Nirenberg represents and protects clients' interests before the U.S. Congress, federal agencies, and the White House. He specializes in managing complex and controversial issues, and is recognized as an authority on Senate legislative and parliamentary procedures.
