Ion Munteanu sworn in as new judge of the Supreme Court of Justice

Former Prosecutor General Ion Munteanu was officially sworn in on Tuesday, May 27, during a plenary session of the Superior Council of Magistracy. Sergiu Caraman, the President of the Superior Council of Magistracy, congratulated Munteanu on taking on one of the highest positions in the judicial system.
"You have emerged from the prosecutor's office and reached the highest position within that system: that of Prosecutor General. Following that, you transitioned into the judicial system as a judge on the highest court. This is a remarkable achievement, and I congratulate you on successfully passing the competition. My colleagues and I have high expectations for your success in your new role as a judge of the Supreme Court of Justice," stated Sergiu Caraman, president of the Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM).
Caraman noted that, although the prosecutor's office is part of the judiciary, the role of a judge carries different responsibilities. "From this position, you must ensure justice is served. Public hope and expectations are high, and we trust you will succeed in delivering justice. May this new beginning be prosperous, and may you live up to the expectations of the citizens while using all your experience to enhance the image of the judicial system."
In response, Ion Munteanu expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him and acknowledged the challenges of his new role. "This is a challenge for the system I come from, as it is unprecedented for a prosecutor to directly ascend to the Supreme Court of Justice. I assure the Superior Council and society that I will adhere strictly to the oath I took and will act with dedication and responsibility in this esteemed position where I have earned the trust of the Superior Council of Magistracy," said Ion Munteanu.
Ion Munteanu has resigned from his position as Prosecutor General after being appointed a judge at the Supreme Court of Justice. The Head of State signed a decree formalizing this decision on May 23, and it became effective upon its publication in the Official Gazette.
We remind you that Ion Munteanu was selected by the Superior Council of Magistracy as a judge for the Supreme Court following a meeting on May 15. He holds a law degree and a master’s degree in economic law. His career began in 2006, and from 2010 to 2018, he worked at the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, where he also served as Deputy Head. Munteanu held the position of Prosecutor General for less than a year, starting in June 2024.
