46th World Vine and Wine Congress in Chișinău: historic moment for Moldovan wine industry

The World Congress of Vine and Wine will be held for the first time in the Republic of Moldova from June 16 to 20. This event is regarded as the most significant international gathering dedicated to the wine sector. Organized annually by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), this year marks its 46th edition. The Congress will bring together experts, researchers, winegrowers, oenologists, producers, and policymakers from 51 member countries to discuss the future of the wine industry.

The organization of this event in the Republic of Moldova marks a historic moment for both world viticulture and our country, stated Andrian Digolean, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry.
Representatives from 51 member countries will engage in scientific activities across four commissions. Approximately 270 scientific papers have been registered, and these presentations will be debated over three days. On the fourth day, delegates will enjoy technical visits to wineries—around 300 visits in total—where our producers will welcome them warmly. This will showcase Moldova as a respected wine-producing country, deserving of hosting this congress.
According to Andrian Digolean, this event holds significant importance for local winemakers. He emphasizes that international initiatives like this will help raise awareness of Moldovan wines.
"This conference has a strong scientific focus. In light of global warming, we will discuss more resilient soil types that can withstand drought, excess rainfall, and various diseases. Discussions will also address trends affecting the wine industry, noting that the global area of vineyards has decreased from 7.4 million hectares to 7.2 million hectares. Ultimately, this event will primarily benefit the Republic of Moldova, our winemakers, and our winegrowers. Organizing this congress is a recognition of their daily efforts in the fields, enabling us to export our wines to over 75 countries by 2024."
The Republic of Moldova is a member of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), being the first post-Soviet country to join. In 2024, the OIV will celebrate its 100th anniversary, and hosting the congress in our country will mark the beginning of the organization's second century.
