Significant progress in the areas of the rule of law and human rights is essential for the Republic of Moldova to join the European Union. This statement was made during a press conference by Michael McGrath, the European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, and the Rule of Law, who is currently on an official visit to Chisinau.

The Republic of Moldova is firmly committed to the path of European Union accession. I believe that Moldova's future lies within the EU. The accession process is based on fundamental principles, which necessitate making tangible progress in areas such as the rule of law and human rights. The European Commission looks forward to opening negotiations on various clusters as soon as Moldova meets the necessary criteria. Together, we will diligently implement the roadmap for justice and anti-corruption reforms, which are essential for Moldova’s accession to the EU,” stated an official during a joint press conference with the Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.

The Minister expressed gratitude to the European Commissioner for the financial support provided by the EU, particularly for the vetting process of prosecutors, assuring that Moldova is making progress in this area according to the established timetable.

“Three years after the initiation of the vetting reform, the progress we discussed today confirms that we are on the right track. We increasingly recognize that vetting is vital for restoring trust in society. We remain committed to ensuring that the profound reform of the justice system is approached with great care and patience, aiming to build trust, transparency, and stability,” said the Minister of Justice.

Veronica Mihailov-Moraru also emphasized the need to protect democracy and the rule of law during discussions with the European official, particularly in light of electoral corruption and foreign interference.

“We must strengthen our state institutions to address these challenges and improve legislation where necessary,” said the Minister.

In this context, Commissioner Michael McGrath commended the Moldovan authorities' efforts and resilience in facing challenges, including foreign interference and hybrid threats.

The European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law, and Consumer Protection, Michael McGrath, is scheduled to visit Chisinau from June 5 to 6.

Additionally, on May 28, the Government of the Republic of Moldova approved the National Programme for Accession to the European Union for 2025–2029. This reference document outlines the steps the country will take in the European integration process, including commitments to harmonize national legislation with EU standards and implement necessary reforms in key areas such as justice, economy, public administration, agriculture, environment, education, and infrastructure.
