Ukraine will build new Danube bridge to Romanian city of Isaccea

A new bridge will be constructed over the Danube River in the southern part of the Odessa region. This bridge will connect the village of Orlivka, located in the Ismail district, to the Romanian city of Isaccea. According to Ukrainskaia Pravda, the Orlivka-Isaccea bridge will be a key component of the broader southern transport corridor, facilitating connections between Ukraine and the European Union through Romania.
The project was included in the Strategy for the Reconstruction and Development of the Region for 2025-2027, which is published on the Odessa Regional Council's website. This new bridge will be part of the international route E87, linking Ukraine with Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey.
Currently, drivers are required to take a lengthy detour through the Republic of Moldova, which involves crossing the border twice. According to Ukrainian media, the new bridge will shorten the distance to Isaccea by approximately 80 kilometers.
International aid will fund the construction of the bridge, totaling over 12.6 billion hryvnias (about 27 million euros) over three years. In 2025, 1.26 billion hryvnias will be allocated, followed by nearly 3.8 billion in 2026 and over 7.5 billion in 2027.
The upcoming phases of the project include design, environmental studies, the actual construction of the bridge, access roads, and the establishment of crossing points and connections to international roads.
The future bridge will feature four lanes and pedestrian sidewalks on both sides. According to news. ro, it will also be designed to withstand earthquakes with a magnitude of up to 9 on the Richter scale.
An access road of 3 kilometers will be built from the Ukrainian side, and an additional access road of 950 meters will be constructed on the Romanian side.
In the fall of 2023, the Russian Federation established a crossing point with the ferry "Orlivka" in the Odessa region, which is located on the border with Romania.
