European Parliament proposes including the Republic of Moldova in the EU's multiannual budget

The Republic of Moldova stands to gain from pre-accession funds that are explicitly included in the European Union's multiannual budget. The European Parliament is scheduled to vote on this report this week, and the MEP Dan Barna asserts that this measure ensures predictable and consistent support for our country in the coming years.

This request to include pre-accession funds for the Republic of Moldova in the European budget should be viewed as an important gesture of support. It eliminates the need for periodic negotiations every year or two to secure funding or programs, as the allocated amounts will be known from the outset. The Republic of Moldova must be integrated into the European budget, similar to other significant European policies, as emphasized by the MEP in an interview for Moldova 1.

These funds are intended to support structural reforms and strategic areas such as infrastructure, education, health, and public administration. There is a particular focus on security and defense, especially in light of the United States' strategic repositioning.

"The European Union must invest now in defense for the long term. Security and defense should become a separate and critical policy, embraced by each state. Through this amendment, we proposed that the procurement mechanisms for security and defense, which the European Union utilizes, should also be accessible to the Republic of Moldova. As a country that aspires to join the European Union, Moldova should participate in these mechanisms. This facility will enable Moldova to access structural procurements when they open at the European level, demonstrating that Europe is fully welcoming Moldova's accession," Barna asserted.

The MEP believes that the Republic of Moldova serves as a model of reform among candidate countries vying for accession. The European Parliament's unwavering support for initiatives targeting Moldova further attests to this recognition.

"The pro-European and democratic parties in the European Parliament currently support the Republic of Moldova. Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, stated that among the countries in the accession process—including the Western Balkans, Montenegro, Albania, and North Macedonia—Moldova stands out as the top performer in terms of readiness and responsiveness to the reforms proposed by the government in Chișinău," Dan Barna highlighted.

Additionally, the MEP expressed his belief that on September 28, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova will choose to continue along the European path.

We remind you that in the spring of this year, the European Union adopted a Growth Plan for Moldova valued at 1.9 billion euros. The first pre-financing funds exceeding 300 million euros are expected to arrive in Chișinău soon.
