At least eight people died in a hot air balloon accident in Brazil.

Another 13 people are reported to have survived the tragedy, which occurred in the state of Santa Catarina. The balloon apparently caught fire in mid-air and rapidly crashed to the ground.

According to preliminary data, up to 22 people were believed to be on board, so the death toll could rise.

Thirteen survivors were taken to nearby hospitals.

Local media reports that the balloon's pilot — who is said to be among the survivors — said the fire was caused by a spare torch in the balloon's basket.

The picturesque, canyon-filled region where the accident happened, located 170 miles from the state capital, Florianópolis, is a major tourist destination known as the "Brazilian Cappadocia," named after the region in Turkey where spectacular hot air balloon trips are popular.

Santa Catarina State Governor Jorginho Mello expressed his "dismay" over the incident.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine all the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
