The Republic of Moldova will borrow €101 million from the EIB to build Cahul regional hospital

The Republic of Moldova will borrow 101 million euros from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to construct the Cahul Regional Hospital. This facility will be equipped with modern technology and will serve more than 300,000 residents in the southern districts of the country.

The Government has officially approved initiating negotiations for the financing contract with the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco stated that the construction of the Cahul Regional Hospital will enhance access to advanced medical treatments for patients from the districts of Cahul, Leova, Ceadir-Lunga, Taraclia, Cantemir, Vulcanesti, and the Gagauzia Autonomous Region.

During the Government meeting, Nemerenco emphasized that the new hospital will improve the efficiency and quality of care. It will also contribute to better public health indicators, reduce the length of hospital stays, and lower the costs for patients travelling to Chisinau. Additionally, this facility will alleviate pressure on national medical institutions.

According to the feasibility study, the new hospital will cover an area of 50,811 square meters and be equipped with state-of-the-art medical devices and advanced technologies.

"The hospital will feature eight modern operating rooms, interventional radiology departments, cardiac catheterization facilities, advanced endoscopy procedures, and a tertiary emergency unit with a hybrid room for complex interventions," Minister Nemerenco noted.

Furthermore, a regional oncology centre will be established within the Cahul Regional Hospital. This center will provide modern chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and brachytherapy services and nuclear medicine facilities such as a Gamma Camera and SPECT-CT.

The new hospital will be built on the current Cahul Regional Hospital site. It will have modernized infrastructure, be energy-efficient, and offer improved patient accommodation conditions.

"Construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of next year," added Ala Nemerenco.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean stated that the Cahul Regional Hospital is scheduled for completion by 2030, which aligns with the deadline set by authorities for the Republic of Moldova's accession to the European Union.
