Long awaited Vasilcău road project underway in Soroca

Road construction on the route to Vasilcău commune in Soroca district is in full swing. This segment of the road was initially slated for repair under the Romania-Republic of Moldova Joint Operational Programme, a European Union-funded initiative worth €2.3 million.

However, the funds were not utilized and were subsequently returned. Consequently, the Soroca District Council is now covering the cost of the work.
"We've started restoring two culverts – the first and the third. We're supposed to complete them in a week, but we're doing it in two days to ensure traffic access. Next, we'll process the road, remove the gravel, and lay the asphalt layer," explains Veaceslav Badrajan, the construction site manager.
"This is the most anticipated project by all Vasilcău residents, including those from Trifăuți village. This road is the sole connection between the district and Vasilcău commune. Since 2014, the start of work has been consistently promised. Finally, in 2025, with God's help, construction has commenced," says Tudor Golub, Mayor of Vasilcău commune.

Drivers hope they won't have to spend a lot of money on car repairs anymore.
"It's been a nightmare. So much dust, damaged cars, and potholes. I'm completely in favor of this happening; it's genuinely a good thing."
"Last year, they started and completed a small section, but then claimed there was no money, that the funds had run out. Perhaps they'll finish it this time."

Due to the previous non-utilization of funds allocated for this road segment, the Soroca District Council reimbursed over €760,000. Consequently, the local authority allocated 29 million lei from its budget to continue the work.
"Last year, work was carried out using European funds, 12.5 million. The remaining unutilized funds, unfortunately, were returned in accordance with contractual clauses. This year, we aim to complete approximately 75-80 percent, specifically the road surfacing. For next year, what remains is the road safety infrastructure, meaning the road markings and traffic signs," explains Veaceslav Rusnac, President of Soroca District.
The repair work on the nearly four-kilometer road section is anticipated to be completed next year.
