Russia’s Ambassador-designate to Chișinău still not accredited: Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi explains

The Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Moldova, Oleg Ozerov, is currently unaccredited in the country. Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that although attempts were made to grant accreditation, the process was postponed due to statements and actions by Ozerov that are considered unacceptable and threatening to the Republic of Moldova.

"He is an approved ambassador but has not yet been accredited. Although there were several attempts to grant him accreditation, including setting a date, certain statements and actions directed against the Republic of Moldova have caused delays. These actions include unfounded statements and hazardous incidents, such as the drones that exploded on Moldovan territory near the homes of our citizens in the south of the country. These issues cannot be overlooked," the minister explained in a program on Realitatea.

Given these circumstances, the accreditation of the Russian ambassador were temporarily postponed. The Moldovan authorities will monitor the situation to determine whether there is a genuine opportunity to stabilize diplomatic relations.

The official warned that if the "bellicose rhetoric and threatening actions" continue, the Republic of Moldova will take appropriate measures to protect its national interests.

Oleg Ozerov has been Russia's ambassador-designate to Chisinau since October 2024. He holds the diplomatic status of Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the second rank. Prior to his appointment, he served as Ambassador for Special Missions and Head of the Secretariat of the Russia-Africa Economic Forum, a position he has held since May 2020.
