Key German support for Moldova's European integration
Germany, a founding member of the European Union, plays "an active role" in supporting the Republic of Moldova's European integration and national economic development.
President Maia Sandu conveyed to German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who visited Chișinău on July 1, that Germany is also a "key trade partner" and a "significant source of foreign direct investment," bringing innovation and generating secure, well-paying jobs in our country.
Germany's top diplomat arrived in Moldova in the evening for his first visit to Chișinău since taking office in May 2025, following discussions with officials in Kyiv. He visited the Metropolitan Cathedral "Nativity of the Lord" in the city center, then made a brief press statement, reaffirming Germany's support for Moldova's European integration. Later, the German Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs had dinner with the head of state.

A press release from the Presidency indicates that Maia Sandu expressed gratitude for Germany's consistent support in managing recent crises, including essential contributions to the energy sector—aid that helped reduce the burden of utility bills for Moldovan citizens.
The President also mentioned support for projects improving the standard of living, such as the expansion of water and sewage networks in Cahul, Călărași, and Strășeni, and for strengthening the defense sector.
"Discussions also focused on ensuring fair parliamentary elections, protected from external influences," the Presidency stated, adding that the meeting reconfirmed "the solid partnership between the two countries, as well as their shared commitment to promoting peace and security in the region."
It's worth noting that Berlin's top diplomat expressed hope that Moldovan citizens will decide in the September 28 parliamentary elections to continue on the European path: "If they wish to do so, they will have the support of the Federal Republic of Germany in this endeavor."
