Maia Sandu: Moldova's EU membership is already happening

The Republic of Moldova's accession process to the European Union is already underway.
It's no longer a "distant dream or a vague promise," but a reality built step by step, with the support of all 27 member states, President Maia Sandu declared after the first Republic of Moldova – European Union summit, held on July 4 in Chișinău, in the presence of European leaders Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa.
"The first Moldova – European Union summit shows that our country's accession to the EU is indeed underway. It's no longer a distant dream or a vague promise. It's a process rooted in reality and built step by step, with the full support of the European Union and all 27 member states. Because Moldova matters, and because the entire European Union is working hand in hand with us for our country to become a full member of this family. Today, we discussed the how and when of our accession. We're no longer talking about the if. This wasn't due to luck, but to unprecedented political will in both Chișinău and Brussels, coupled with the daily efforts of hundreds of people," the head of state noted.
In her post-summit speech, the President stated that "Moldovans knocked on the EU's doors, and the European Union opened them when we knew our country was ready to contribute to a more united and stronger Europe," where the Republic of Moldova would be "protected, respected, and heard."
"Our closer ties with the European Union have already brought us concrete benefits. First of all, the Republic of Moldova has remained free and peaceful. We felt European solidarity when we needed it most. We've maintained our direction and anchored our future in the values of peace and prosperity – a European future. This rapprochement also brings real economic results," Maia Sandu stated.
The President affirmed that the European Union will invest €1.9 billion in the development of the Republic of Moldova over the next three years. These funds will be directed towards modernizing infrastructure, education, energy security, and supporting local entrepreneurs. Furthermore, the completion of the Vulcănești – Chișinău power line in 2025 was confirmed, alongside the launch of new energy projects, including the development of renewable sources and the modernization of energy efficiency in schools, hospitals, and homes.
"We're investing in renewable sources – solar, wind, and biogas – to secure locally produced energy at a fair price. We're also helping people lower their bills through energy efficiency projects dedicated to homes, social institutions like schools and hospitals, and businesses in the agri-food sector," the head of state enumerated.
Maia Sandu also mentioned the Republic of Moldova's firm support for Ukraine, highlighting that peace in our country is also possible thanks to the resistance of our Eastern neighbors.
"We have peace in the Republic of Moldova because our Ukrainian neighbors are defending it for us. This must be understood and appreciated. We support a lasting peace in Ukraine – a true peace, with clear guarantees that the war won't restart. We'll continue to be a reliable security partner for both Ukraine and the European Union. The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine are on the same path towards the European Union, and the integration of both countries will strengthen European security," Maia Sandu emphasized.
The President warned against attempts by the Kremlin and its networks of influence in the Republic of Moldova to undermine the country's European path.
"The Kremlin and its strategically scattered voices, including in Chișinău, are trying to convince us that the Republic of Moldova shouldn't be helped. They don't respect our people's choice; they don't see us as equals. They don't understand help and solidarity – they only know blackmail and control. While Europe offers us the greatest development support in our history, these voices want to cut off our access to funds, partnerships, and hope," the head of state emphasized.
Finally, Maia Sandu thanked the European leaders for their constant support and expressed her wish for the Republic of Moldova – EU summit to become a tradition, bringing the country ever closer to full membership in the European Union.
"We move forward together – with dignity, courage, and hope. Moldova is ready to contribute, with all its heart and skill, to this great European construction of peace, prosperity, and solidarity," she added.
It is worth noting that on July 4, the first bilateral Republic of Moldova – European Union summit took place at the State Residence in Chișinău. Hosted by President Maia Sandu, it was described by experts as an "historic event" confirming Brussels' support for accelerating the Republic of Moldova's EU accession process.
