Moldova strengthens air defense with new law passed by Parliament

The Parliament has approved a draft law in its second reading that outlines specific measures to protect the national airspace of the Republic of Moldova. The purpose of this initiative is to prevent and address threats that could impact national security, air border integrity, and the safety of the population and heritage.

The new law, drafted by the Ministry of Defense, regulates the actions of state institutions in the event of airspace violations and outlines the cooperation procedures among the involved authorities. It includes provisions for monitoring, controlling, and neutralizing aerial threats, along with ensuring rapid and coordinated responses in emergencies.

The project establishes clear guidelines for addressing aircraft that illegally enter the country's airspace. Specifically, drones that cross the state border without authorization can be neutralized or destroyed by the Air Force or the Border Police, including actions to block their command and communication systems. For manned aircraft, authorities will work together to protect the airspace, depending on the severity of the situation.

The explanatory note for this legislative initiative states, "The new law aims to create a unified, coherent, and interoperable legislative framework that efficiently regulates all aspects related to the security of national airspace and the actions to be taken against unauthorized aircraft."

According to officials, this law aims to address existing legislative gaps and establish a comprehensive and effective framework for addressing security challenges in the region.

We remind you that since the onset of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, several Russian drones have traversed the airspace of the Republic of Moldova, with some crashing near local communities.
