Moldova sees surge in insured cataract surgeries

Over 6,900 insured people received cataract surgeries funded by compulsory health insurance during the first six months of this year.
According to the National Health Insurance Company (CNAM), the number of these procedures increased by over a thousand compared to the same period last year.
Over 79.5 million lei were allocated for these surgeries. This amount covers not only the cost of the operation itself, but also post-operative care, medical tests, consultations, medication, as well as patient accommodation and meals in the hospital.
Cataract surgeries are performed under the special program "Operative Treatment for Cataract" by 18 medical facilities contracted by CNAM, including nine public hospitals, one departmental hospital, and eight private clinics.
For 2025, authorities have allocated a budget of over 145 million lei for 12,635 such surgical procedures. All insured people with medical indications can receive this procedure, based on an appointment from a waiting list.
According to CNAM, the waiting time for an appointment varies depending on the facility: up to one year for large hospitals and approximately half a year for district medical facilities.
