Moldova strengthens Germany ties, pledges Ukraine aid

The strong partnership between the Republic of Moldova and Germany, and their shared commitment to supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, were the key topics discussed by President Maia Sandu and the leader of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz.

Their meeting took place in Rome, on the sidelines of the Ukraine Recovery Conference.

President Sandu expressed Moldova's gratitude for Germany's consistent support, including during challenging times like the energy crisis, and for its assistance in Moldova's economic development and infrastructure modernization.

"We discussed the strong partnership between Moldova and Germany, our ongoing efforts to improve the lives of Moldovans, and our firm determination to join the European Union," said President Maia Sandu.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, is a crucial trade partner for Moldova and an active supporter of its economic development, with investments that have created thousands of jobs across all regions of the country.

President Sandu participated in the fourth edition of the Ukraine Recovery Conference, held in Rome. In her address, she emphasized Moldova's readiness to contribute to Ukraine's rebuilding and to become an essential economic and logistical corridor, especially for the southern part of the neighboring country – from Odesa and Mykolaiv to Kherson, Dnipro, and Zaporizhzhia. She highlighted Moldova's strategic advantages: geographical proximity, secure infrastructure, functional transport connections, and a stable, business-friendly environment.

On the margins of the event, President Sandu held several bilateral meetings with other heads of state, including her Italian counterpart, Sergio Mattarella.
