Moldova tackles youth unemployment crisis

One in four young people in Moldova are neither employed nor in education or training.

To address this challenge, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, with the support of the German Government, has launched the National Youth Employment Promotion Campaign. This initiative aims to connect young people with the services and opportunities offered by the National Employment Agency (ANOFM) and to boost awareness of career guidance, training, and employment options in Moldova.

Migration, school dropouts, and a lack of motivation are the main reasons young people are reluctant to seek employment, explained Natalia Radvan, head of the Call Center and Communication section at ANOFM. According to her, the agency has already released a list of summer job vacancies specifically for young people.

"We have vacancies in various fields, but the most sought-after are in sales. Available positions include salesperson, ticket collector, cashier, packer, and assistant roles at children's summer camps," Natalia Radvan stated during the "Zi de zi" (Day by Day) show on Radio Moldova.

In the coming months, activities will be organized nationwide, including: career orientation camps, information and career counseling sessions, youth festivals, and an online campaign tailored to the needs and language of the younger generation.

"Nearly 140,000 young people are in a period of transition and need guidance, confidence, and support. It's our responsibility to provide them with these essential tools," declared Alexei Buzu, Minister of Labor and Social Protection, at the official launch of the campaign on July 10.

Germany's Ambassador to Moldova, Margret Uebber, affirmed that good job opportunities for young people contribute not only to their economic security but also to the country's sustainable development.

"We support the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection's efforts to promote youth employment, as it focuses on the country's greatest potential. Germany will remain a reliable partner for Moldova and for all young people who want to build their future at home, here in Moldova," the head of the diplomatic mission noted.

The campaign is part of a youth employment support project, implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), in partnership with the Ministry of Labor, and will run until the end of the year, with the possibility of extension.
