Moldovan firefighters join international mission in Greece

A team of Moldovan firefighters was dispatched to Greece today, July 14, to assist the Greek authorities in battling wildfires in the Patras region of Achaia County. This mission is conducted under the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism and represents a significant gesture of solidarity from the Republic of Moldova toward its European partners.

"You are embarking on an important mission, not just a simple one. This demonstrates that the Republic of Moldova is not only a country that receives assistance from our Greek and European friends but also one that consistently contributes whenever our allied countries need us," declared Igor Grosu, Parliament Speaker, during the ceremony for the detachment of the IGSU Land Forest Fire Fighting Team.

The Moldovan official expressed gratitude for the warm reception the Greek population extended to Moldovan firefighters during their previous mission.

"I fondly recall the images from that earlier mission when, upon your return, the Greek people lined the streets to welcome the convoy, offering a heartfelt ‘thank you’ for all you accomplished there,” he said.

At the event, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin, emphasized that this initiative goes beyond being a mere symbolic gesture; it is a substantial contribution during a critical time.

"This is a day when Moldova sends courage and expertise where they are needed most. Greece is facing challenging times as wildfires, exacerbated by climate change, threaten lives, homes, and entire forests. In this moment, Moldova stands ready to assist, alongside other European partners who have stepped up to help Greece," the minister stated.

She pointed out that this marks the fifth international mission for the IGSU and the second since the Republic of Moldova joined the European Civil Protection Mechanism.

"Today, our commitment is represented through the people involved and for the people in need. You, the firefighters and rescuers, are the embodiment of true solidarity," reported Daniella Misail-Nichitin.

Alexandru Oprea, the head of the IGSU, also sent a message of encouragement to the firefighters. He reminded them that the flag of the Republic of Moldova would fly alongside those of 13 other EU member states responding to Greece's call for assistance.

"This mission is in response to the request for support from the Greek authorities and is part of the European Union's prepositioned forces program, organized and managed through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. Although you hail from six different subdivisions, starting today and for the next two weeks, you will function as one team, representing not only the General Inspectorate for Emergencies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs but also the Republic of Moldova. Please use all the knowledge and skills you have acquired, and remember that we are eagerly awaiting your safe return home," said Alexandru Oprea.

The detached team comprises firefighters and rescuers from various regions of the country, equipped with specialised vehicles and modern intervention equipment. The mission is expected to last approximately two weeks.
