Trump sets 50-day tariff deadline for Russia, boosts Ukraine aid

US President Donald Trump announced Monday he'd punish Russia by imposing tariffs if an agreement to end the war in Ukraine isn't reached within 50 days.
The American leader made this statement during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office of the White House, AP reports.
"We'll impose very severe tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days," Trump stated during a meeting with the NATO Secretary General.
The President suggested that such tariffs could go as high as 100%, though he didn't specify which products might be targeted.
Trump pledged to apply harsh tariffs if the war in Ukraine doesn't conclude. He described these as secondary tariffs, meaning they'd target Russia's trade partners. If implemented, these tariffs would serve as a measure to isolate Moscow within the global economy.
In addition, Donald Trump publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin's reluctance to reach a peace agreement in Ukraine, accusing the Russian leader of "spewing nonsense" at Washington.
"I'm very disappointed in President Putin. I thought he was someone who believed what he said. And he'll talk so nicely and then he'll bomb people at night. We don't like that," Trump said, according to Euronews.com.
In a reversal last week, Trump announced that Washington would send sophisticated weapons, including Patriot air defense systems, to Ukraine via NATO.
Mark Rutte also affirmed that European allies would purchase weapons from the U.S. to support Ukraine and that this armament and equipment should prompt Russian President Vladimir Putin to "reconsider" peace negotiations.
The NATO Secretary General stated that Ukraine would receive "a massive number of military equipment," such as missiles, air defense systems, and ammunition.
"Speed is essential here," Rutte said.
He specified that Germany, Finland, Canada, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Denmark would be among the buyers supplying Ukraine.
