Moldova fights Russian disinformation, protects EU path
In the Republic of Moldova, there's a noticeable surge in attempts to manipulate public opinion, specifically aimed at undermining trust in state institutions and the country's European trajectory.
This was stated by Government spokesperson Daniel Vodă during a press conference following a Cabinet meeting.
Vodă identified several "false" narratives being promoted, offering examples like: EU integration strips us of sovereignty; the judiciary is politically controlled; Moldova is undergoing militarization; the economy is collapsing, and Moldova is isolated; the West is attacking our church and values.
"We are, in fact, alerting the public to the need to safeguard our country and the truth. We are witnessing an intensification of public opinion manipulation attempts, especially online. Various groups and channels affiliated with Russian Federation propaganda have promoted, and continue to promote, alarming, false, or manipulative messages with the aim of undermining trust in state institutions and our country's European direction," Daniel Vodă declared.
Vodă also emphasized that, on the contrary, "Moldova has gained respect, cultivated partnerships, and attracted investments in recent years — precisely thanks to its European trajectory."
Recently, President Maia Sandu also asserted that the Kremlin is attempting to destabilize the situation in Moldova through a disinformation campaign. In a message posted on social media, the head of state wrote that "aberration-inventing laboratories" have started "operating at full throttle," and that in the coming period, "lies will flow like a river from the Kremlin" in an effort to gain control over Moldova and hand it over to foreign interests.
It is worth noting that on July 15, European Union representatives announced a new regional center for the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), which will support both Moldova and Ukraine in combating disinformation.
