Moldovan citizenship surges in Transnistrian region

Over 300,000 residents of the Transnistrian region hold Moldovan citizenship.
Of these, 347,161 are registered as living in localities on the left bank of the Dniester River and in the municipality of Bender, according to the Bureau for Reintegration Policies.
Data from the Public Services Agency show that as of June 30, 2025, 375,044 individuals from the Transnistrian region were registered in the State Population Register. They are listed with permanent residence, temporary residence, or other forms of registration.
Of these, 354,718 have their permanent residence in the localities on the left bank of the Dniester and in Bender municipality. Additionally, 7,557 people hold foreign citizenship.
The same source states that 264,692 residents of the Transnistrian region possess valid domestic identity documents, and 232,669 hold valid Republic of Moldova citizen passports. In the last two months alone, another 28,197 residents from the left bank of the Dniester and Bender municipality obtained Moldovan identity documents. This increase is attributed to legislative changes that have simplified the citizenship acquisition process.
Government representatives reiterate that the process of issuing documents to residents on the left bank of the Dniester underscores the constant commitment of Moldovan authorities to facilitate their reintegration into the national legal framework, ensuring their access to public services and the guarantee of fundamental rights.
At the same time, BRP representatives emphasize that citizens of the Republic of Moldova benefit from numerous advantages offered by the country's candidate status for European Union accession, including free movement within the EU and access to extensive economic, educational, and social opportunities.
