The Central Electoral Commission canceled the registration of Nicanor Ciochină, an independent candidate for the position of mayor of the Boldurești commune, and declared the results of the second round of the election held on June 1 invalid.
We remind you that Nicanor Ciochină previously won the elections for mayor of the Boldurești commune, but he is currently under criminal investigation for the fatal injury of a 14-year-old child.
Ciochină’s opponent, Sergiu Bulicanu, contested the election results at the Central Electoral Commission, citing several irregularities, including alleged fraud involving the mobile ballot box and forged signatures. Bulicanu also appealed to the Ungheni Court, which annulled the Electoral Council of the Boldurești District's decision on June 10, which confirmed the second round of voting conducted on June 1.
Initially, the Ungheni Court annulled Nicanor Ciochină’s mayoral mandate on June 25. Later, on July 4, the Northern Court of Appeal ordered the annulment of the second round and required the Central Electoral Commission to organize a repeat vote. Although the Supreme Court of Justice later annulled the appeal court's decision, the Central Electoral Commission decided to proceed with the election on July 20, while also reexamining the appeal filed by candidate Sergiu Bulicanu.
After this decision was contested, the Supreme Court of Justice annulled the rulings of the lower courts, stating that only the electoral authority has the right to annul elections. When asked by Teleradio-Moldova to comment on the decision to annul the second round of elections in Boldurești, Nicanor Ciochină referred to it as a "political order."
