Young man, possibly Moldovan citizen, accused of spying for Ukraine in Russia

A 24-year-old man was detained by the Russian FSB for allegedly collecting information about a military base in Ryazan to pass on to Ukrainian special services. Russian media reports that he is originally from the Republic of Moldova and holds Russian citizenship.

“I am an agent of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. I have been collaborating since 2024. I collected and transmitted information about a Russian military unit and a defense industry enterprise in the Ryazan region,” states the Moldovan citizen in a video recording.

Government spokesman Daniel Vodă emphasizes that it is challenging to officially confirm information coming from the Russian Federation due to the limited access of Moldovan consular services in that country.

“Recently, we have observed an increase in activity by specialized institutions in the Russian Federation targeting citizens of the Republic of Moldova. In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an alert warning about the lack of safety for Moldovan citizens and advised against traveling to Russia. Official institutions in the Russian Federation released press statements containing unverified claims,” said Vodă.

When contacted by Moldova 1, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chisinau stated that they had sent a request to the Russian authorities regarding this case but had not received any official confirmation about whether the detained individual is a citizen of Moldova.
