Police probe Alexei Lungu amid political tensions in Moldova

Alexei Lungu, leader of the “Chance” Party, is being investigated by the police for insulting law enforcement and disorderly conduct after an incident that occurred outside the Chișinău Court of Appeal.

The information was confirmed to Teleradio-Moldova by Diana Fetco, head of the Communication and Protocol Section of the General Inspectorate of Police.

According to Fetco, Lungu’s bodyguard, a former carabineer, is also the subject of a separate investigation for obstruction of police activity.

The incident took place on the morning of July 23, after several Telegram channels affiliated with Ilan Șor reported that Lungu had been detained by the police. The footage shows Lungu and another man in a confrontation with the police, refusing to enter a police vehicle.

“I won’t get in the car without a lawyer,” said Lungu.

The “Chance” Party leader reported feeling unwell, and an ambulance was called to the scene. He was transported to hospital, and upon discharge was met by police officers. However, he refused to cooperate with law enforcement at that time.

Lungu was summoned to appear at the police station on July 30 at 2:00 p.m. to provide a statement regarding the allegations against him.

Also on July 23, the “Victory” Bloc filed an appeal with the Court of Appeal after the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) refused to register the bloc for the parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28. One of the main reasons cited by the CEC was that the bloc is considered the successor to the banned “Șor” Party, which had previously been declared unconstitutional. A protest involving members of the bloc was also announced in front of the court.
