Waag: Moldova's future defined by election & EU reforms

Parliamentary elections on September 28 are crucial for the future of Moldovan citizens, and the results of the vote could influence the speed of implementing reforms necessary for Moldova's advancement on its path towards European integration, stated French Ambassador to Chisinau, Dominique Waag, on the "Diplomatic Dimension" show on Moldova 1.

According to the diplomat, the importance and seriousness of the reforms implemented by the Republic of Moldova in recent years have led European countries, especially France, to become increasingly interested in and willing to help the country.

"It's about launching the country's European accession process – the fact that the 27 EU member states considered Moldova's candidacy credible and serious and decided to launch negotiations. Indeed, Moldova's European path is even enshrined in its Constitution. All of this has piqued the curiosity of European states, including France, towards this country. Its geographical location also plays a role; being close to Ukraine, where this war is taking place, holds great, fundamental importance on the European continent. This prompted European states to mobilize in support of Moldova. A swift intervention stemmed from a sense of urgency, of acceleration, a desire to help both Ukraine and Moldova at the same time," Dominique Waag declared.

According to the ambassador, for European states, the adoption and realization of reforms are paramount, but Moldova still has much to do to advance on its European path.

"We want to be sure there won't be a reversal of progress. The reforms that are most sensitive for every candidate country usually concern the rule of law, the fight against corruption, and issues related to internal security. Indeed, these types of reforms are the most difficult to achieve. Moldova's administration has advanced significantly. I believe there is a genuine vision in this country, and I believe the country's leaders know which directions they need to work in," Dominique Waag further emphasized on the show, moderated by journalist Ludmila Barbă.

On the same show, the French Ambassador to Chisinau mentioned that the results of the September elections could influence the speed of reform implementation, but Moldovans will be the ones to make the choice: "Moldovans must make a clear-sighted and undeniable choice. I hope this choice is well-informed, and I wish for the entire political class in Moldova to oppose and denounce external interference, particularly from Russia."

It is worth noting that the leaders of the 27 European Union member states have officially invited the EU Council to take the next steps in the Republic of Moldova's accession process by opening negotiation clusters "when the conditions are met."

In the conclusions adopted at the European Council Summit on June 26, 2025, the Republic of Moldova is congratulated for the reforms it has implemented and is encouraged to continue at the same pace.
