The Parliament passed the declaration on the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine

The declaration on the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine has been voted on by the legislature. Thus, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova condemns the brutality of the war of aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. BCS members of the parliamentary faction left the meeting room, being dissatisfied with the examination of this draft. Moreover, they proposed that a joint declaration be drafted and voted on by the whole Parliament. PAS refused to support the BCS initiative.

In today's plenary session, the parliamentary majority noted that the Russian Federation, since February 2014, has been waging an illegal, unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine, escalated on 24 February 2022 by a full-scale invasion. The document states that "this act of blatant aggression constitutes war crimes and a flagrant and grave violation of the principles of international law and international commitments undertaken by the Russian Federation".

Lawmakers call on the Russian Federation to immediately cease military activities in Ukraine and to unconditionally withdraw all military forces and equipment from the entire internationally recognised territory of Ukraine.

"Meanwhile, the Moldovan authorities support the efforts of the community of democratic states to establish a special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine, establishing accountability for war crimes and for all violations of international humanitarian law committed by the Russian Federation and its henchmen in Ukraine," reads the statement.

It also confirms the readiness of the Moldovan authorities to continue to provide humanitarian assistance and aid to the people of Ukraine who are seeking refuge from the war.

The BCS, on the other hand, proposed another statement declaring "unacceptable the direct or indirect involvement of the country in this conflict. Provocations, instigation of panic and other subversive actions endanger the sovereignty and security of the Republic of Moldova and its citizens," reads the proposed BCS document.

Moreover, according to the source cited, the BCS condemns "any attempts by international actors to intervene in the internal affairs of the Republic of Moldova" and calls on the state authorities to intensify the process of diplomatic negotiations on the international recognition of Moldova's permanent neutrality.

The UN General Assembly last week called for the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops who invaded Ukraine a year ago. The UN member countries voted overwhelmingly for a resolution also calling for a "just and lasting" peace. This is not the first time the UN has condemned the Russian invasion. Last October, 143 countries condemned Russia's annexation of several Ukrainian territories, with five countries voting against.
