First driver in Moldova loses car after being caught drunk behind the wheel

A man from the Ialoveni district is the first citizen of the Republic of Moldova to lose his car after being caught drunk behind the wheel.
According to the Prosecutor General's Office, a man was sentenced to six months in an open prison following a final court decision. Additionally, the Volkswagen he was driving was confiscated for the benefit of the state.
The incident occurred on the evening of October 14, 2023, in the town of Bălțăți, located in the Ialoveni district. Police officers observed the vehicle driving erratically and instructed the driver to pull over.
A breathalyzer test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 1.01 mg/l in the driver's exhaled air. Furthermore, the man was found to be driving without a valid driver's license, which was previously revoked due to similar offences.
In 2022, this individual was involved in a road accident while driving the same vehicle under the influence of alcohol, resulting in moderate bodily harm to another person.
State prosecutors assert that confiscating vehicles in such cases sets an important precedent in the fight against drunk driving.
