Moldova lowers electricity tariffs starting August 1

Consumers in the Republic of Moldova will start paying less for electricity on August 1.
The new prices came into effect following the publication of decisions by the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) in the "Official Gazette."
As a result, consumers in the country's central and southern regions will pay a tariff of 3 lei and 59 bani per kilowatt-hour, which is 51 bani less than the previous rate. Those in the northern part of the country will pay 4 lei, a decrease of 68 bani.
On July 29, Alexandru Ursu, the director of ANRE, explained that the reduction in electricity tariffs was due to lower energy procurement prices observed between January and June. This is primarily because Energocom successfully diversified its procurement sources.
Another important factor, according to the ANRE director, was avoiding expensive emergency energy purchases. Earlier this year, it was estimated that around 7% of consumption would come from such contracts, but this scenario was successfully avoided.
All citizens will continue to receive electricity subsidies provided by the Government, with support from the EU, until December.
Currently, families pay for the first 110 kWh at the rate from before the January 2025 price hike. Specifically, consumers in central and southern Moldova pay 2 lei and 34 bani for the first 110 kWh, while those in the north pay 2 lei and 84 bani.
