Government approves new steps to prevent chemical, radioactive, and epidemic risks

The Republic of Moldova is enhancing its ability to respond to emergencies, including chemical accidents, radioactive leaks, and epidemics. During a meeting on August 6, the Government approved amendments to the Regulation on the National Network for Observation and Control of Environmental Factors, which emphasizes the need for improved coordination among laboratories and specialized institutions.

According to the new provisions, collaboration between responsible agencies will be optimized, allowing for faster, more efficient, and better-coordinated interventions in cases of significant risk to public health or the environment.

The network is responsible for monitoring environmental quality—specifically water, air, soil, and food—and detecting hazardous substances such as radioactive materials, toxic chemicals, or biological agents.

"The proposed changes aim to enhance the activities conducted by institutions and laboratories within the National Network for Laboratory Observation and Control to ensure security in the chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear sectors. The National Network for Observation and Control of Environmental Factors plays a crucial role in emergencies, enabling prompt reactions, assessments of contamination levels, and the guidance of emergency actions to minimize the negative impact on the population," explained the Minister of the Interior, Daniella Misail-Nichitin, during the government meeting.

Additionally, the constant monitoring of drinking water, soil, and food quality will be intensified to prevent risks associated with toxic contaminants and to protect public health.
