Future Prosecutor General of Moldova may be appointed August 19

The competition for the position of Prosecutor General is nearing its final stages. The Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) approved the files of two candidates and will conduct the interviews on Tuesday, August 19.
The CSP (Superior Council of Prosecutors) announced that both candidates for the position of Prosecutor General, Alexandru Machidon and Victor Furtună, meet the necessary qualifications to participate in the competition.
Following the interviews, the scores for each candidate will be released. The Superior Council of Prosecutors will then recommend to President Maia Sandu the candidate who performed best in the competition.
Alexandru Machidon has served as the acting Prosecutor General since May of this year. He has been part of the prosecutor's office system since 2007, starting in Criuleni, and has been based in Chișinău since 2020.
On the other hand, Victor Furtună, who is currently serving as the acting head of the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases, has 14 years of experience within the state prosecutor's system.
The Prosecutors’ Evaluation Commission previously stated that it "did not identify any objections to the ethical and financial integrity" of Victor Furtună.
The competition for the head of the Prosecutor General's Office began on June 12, with applications accepted until July 21.
It is notable that the position of Prosecutor General became vacant following the appointment of Ion Munteanu as a judge on the Supreme Court of Justice. President Maia Sandu signed a decree on May 26, releasing him from his post after he submitted his resignation.
Since 2016, the Prosecutor General has been elected by the CSP for a term of seven years.
