Deputy PM Popșoi urges Moldovans to resist Russian propaganda vigilance

The Republic of Moldova is becoming increasingly stronger and more capable of addressing hybrid attacks and interference from the Russian Federation, especially with the upcoming parliamentary elections. However, vulnerabilities remain, such as the presence of foreign troops in the Transnistrian region. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi in a recent interview with the State Information Agency.
According to an official statement, despite ongoing vulnerabilities, the media and citizens must remain vigilant to avoid being manipulated by propaganda or fake news.
"It will become increasingly difficult to distinguish lies from truth and propaganda from reality. That is precisely why a concerted effort is needed from all sectors of society—journalists, civil society, and citizens—to avoid falling into the traps set by those who wish to harm and divide us," noted Mihai Popșoi.
The Deputy Prime Minister acknowledged that the presence of foreign troops in the Republic of Moldova and the activities of pro-Russian parties pose risks. However, he highlighted that over the past four years, authorities have successfully maintained peace and stability, even in this context. He also emphasized that the constitutional authorities are taking all necessary measures for the country's peaceful reintegration.
"This vulnerability concerning the so-called authorities on the left bank of the Nistru represents an opportunity in the context of European integration. We are open to extending the benefits we receive from the European integration process to our citizens on the left bank, as long as these efforts parallel our goal of peaceful reintegration, which is a natural progression," Popșoi explained.
He further emphasized that the Russian Federation continues to undermine Moldova's economy and security through energy blackmail, hybrid attacks, and propaganda. In contrast, he noted that the European Union provides ongoing support for the democractic development and prosperity of the country. The official expressed confidence that citizens will be able to differentiate between national interests and attempts at manipulation, making informed voting decisions for the benefit of their families and communities.
"Our citizens recognize these issues and condemned actions that are detrimental to the national interest. Therefore, we firmly believe that in this crucial election for the future, our citizens will know how to make the right choice. They will avoid being manipulated, enticed, or bought, and will vote in their own interests and for the benefit of their children and families," he stated.
Additionally, Popșoi reiterated Chișinău's commitment to advancing European integration, aiming to complete the negotiations and ratification of the Accession Agreement with the European Union within the next 2 to 3 years.
He stated that only through European integration can the country ensure its "safety" and announced the goal of concluding accession negotiations within this timeframe.
"We are taking a step-by-step approach, calculating our resources, and prioritizing where the greatest opportunities lie. We firmly believe that with the support of our citizens, we will continue to work to capitalize on all foreign and domestic policy opportunities so that our people can enjoy these benefits. The title our country received—a small country with a big heart—honors us, and we will continue to work to maintain the trust of our international partners and citizens, both at home and in the diaspora," Popșoi concluded.
The parliamentary elections are scheduled for September 28, 2025.
