Correspondence by Dan Alexe // Trump and Putin in Alaska: Last European call
Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are set to meet in Alaska on August 15, marking their first meeting since 2019. Notably, no EU representatives will be present at this meeting. In response to recent calls from Europe, Trump stated that European nations could participate in future peace talks. However, he emphasized that he would not sign any agreement with Putin regarding peace in Ukraine without the involvement of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European representatives.
In a statement to Fox News Radio ahead of the Alaska summit, the U.S. president expressed his belief that Putin will accept a deal, but emphasized that it wouldn't happen until after he meets with the Ukrainian president.
European leaders have cautioned the U.S. president against making a deal without Ukraine and have insisted that Zelensky must be present for any future discussions.
Trump is scheduled to meet with his Russian counterpart on Friday, August 15, for talks at a U.S. Air Force base in Alaska.
Trump has estimated that there is a 25% chance the summit will fail and has indicated he is open to imposing new sanctions on Russia if the talks do not lead to peace. "This meeting sets the stage for a second meeting, but there is a 25% chance that this meeting will not be successful," he stated. When asked if he would impose sanctions, he responded, "I would, yes, if it doesn't work out."
The reality is that the fate of Europe could be determined this Friday in Anchorage, Alaska, when Trump meets with Putin to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. Importantly, the closed-door talks will take place without any representatives from the EU or Ukraine.
European leaders are attempting to ensure that their absence from these talks is not overly significant. "The bilateral meeting between the U.S. and Russia is a positive step," asserted French President Emmanuel Macron, following Wednesday's phone calls between several EU leaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance.
However, Trump is known for his unpredictable decisions, and the final outcome remains uncertain.
