Moldova to build third high-voltage power link with Romania

The Moldovan Ministry of Energy has launched preliminary procedures for a new 400 kV power line that will create a third high-voltage link with Romania.

The project, which includes modernising the 330 kV Străşeni substation, has been declared a "public utility of national interest" by a preliminary commission.

The 70km-long power line will run between Străşeni and Gutinaş. The project also involves upgrading the 330 kV Străşeni substation by adding a new 400 kV section. The route will cross 25 localities in the districts of Străşeni, Călăraşi, Nisporeni, and Hînceşti.

"The new link will allow Moldova to participate more in the regional energy market, importing and exporting power on more competitive terms and accessing a wider range of energy sources," said Dorin Junghietu, Minister of Energy. "The increased capacity will also make the domestic market more flexible, reduce pressure on current infrastructure and help integrate renewables into the grid. This is in line with the standards set by ENTSO-E for a competitive and interconnected European energy market."

The Ministry of Energy says Moldova’s current capacity with ENTSO-E, at 255 MW, is insufficient. It says the new connection with Romania will help address the shortfall and diversify energy sources.

State Secretary Constantin Borosan said a Memorandum of Understanding with Romania, signed in December 2023, laid the groundwork for the strategic project, which he says will benefit the country’s energy system and broader economic development. In parallel, the government is holding talks with international partners to secure funding.
