Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev says authorities in Baku are monitoring "sources" of new threats and strengthening the country's military to ensure its security, The Moscow Times reports.

The comments come amid a deterioration of relations between Baku and Moscow, with Russian propagandists threatening to launch a "new special military operation" in the South Caucasus.

"We must be prepared for war at any moment because the way things are evolving in the world, we can't predict what tomorrow will bring. Whoever decides to strike Azerbaijan will regret it," Mr. Aliyev said at a meeting with residents of the city of Kelbadjar, as quoted by Adalet.

"We don't advise anyone to consider hostile actions against us... We have strong allies and our position in international organisations is always recognised as just... Unlike some other countries, we have not occupied any foreign territory," he stressed.

Previously, Russian propagandist Vladimir Solovyov expressed concern about the risk of NATO bases appearing in the Caspian Sea region, suggesting cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkey.

"This is so dangerous that, from a geopolitical point of view, it can have consequences that would make this conflict not the last special military operation of our generation," Mr. Solovyov declared.

Azeri President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a peace agreement at the White House on August 8 during a ceremony hosted by US President Donald Trump. The text of the US-mediated peace agreement was published by Armenia and Azerbaijan on August 11. The agreement means the governments in Yerevan and Baku renounce all claims to each other's territories, refrain from using force against one another, and commit to respecting international law.
