Moldova-Romania border: New joint control system aims to cut wait times

A new joint border control system has been launched at the Giurgiulești-Galați road crossing, a move by the governments of Moldova and Romania to improve efficiency.
Under the new system, all border checks will be carried out on the Romanian side at the Galați crossing. This will eliminate the need for a second stop on the Moldovan side at Giurgiulești for those leaving the country.
The system will operate with eight lanes for cars and buses, and four for lorries.
A Border Police statement said the aim was to reduce waiting times and improve traffic flow and cooperation. The statement added that the system was already in use at the Leușeni-Albița crossing and was designed to improve transit at the EU's eastern border.

The move follows an announcement made during a visit by Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan to Chișinău that joint control would be established at the crossing. The Border Police said infrastructure would also be ready for a similar system at the Sculeni-Sculeni crossing by the end of the year.
In a related development, teams from both sides of the Prut River will form a working group to discuss modernising border infrastructure.
