US renewable energy investments fall dramatically amid policy uncertainty

US renewable energy investments have plummeted this year as developers react to policy changes from the White House, a new report says.

The report states investments fell by £20.5bn - 36% - in the first six months of the year compared to the second half of 2024. Commitments for wind and solar projects were also down 18% annually. Analysts also said uncertainty over Donald Trump's tariffs contributed to the decline.

Solar and wind power are the most significant source of renewable energy in the US, but their growth has been heavily dependent on government subsidies. Those subsidies were dramatically cut in a tax and spending bill backed by Mr Trump in July.

The report's authors added that Mr Trump’s disdain for wind energy has increased investment risks and prevented new offshore projects from securing financing this year.

Investors may now look to redirect capital to more favourable markets such as the EU, where renewable investments grew by almost £30bn in the first half of this year.
