Sorana Cîrstea's WTA Cleveland Trophy stolen after US Open defeat

Sorana Cîrstea's WTA Cleveland trophy has been stolen just days after she won it, the tennis star has announced.

The incident comes as Cîrstea suffered a series of defeats, including losses in the second round of the US Open singles to Karolina Muchova and the first round of the doubles competition.

The trophy was taken after being won on 23 August. Cîrstea shared the news in an Instagram story.

In the post, the world No 71 appealed for its return, writing: "Whoever stole my Cleveland trophy, please return it. It has no material value, only sentimental value."

The Cleveland victory marked her third career WTA singles title. She won the tournament without dropping a set and began her campaign in the qualifying rounds.
