Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has resigned amid internal disagreements within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, according to reports.

A spokesperson for the prime minister's office refused to comment on the resignation reports.

His decision is believed to have been an attempt to avoid a potential split in the party. The LDP-led coalition, which he led, lost its upper house majority in July – the first such loss in the party's 70-year history.

Following the election defeat, his colleagues urged him to resign, but he initially refused. Mr Ishiba took office in October 2024, pledging to tackle inflation and reform the LDP. However, the party was soon embroiled in a series of funding scandals, according to NHK.
