Chisinau hosts key energy transition meeting

Chisinau is hosting a regional meeting on electricity markets and energy transition this week, organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The event is being attended by representatives from 13 countries, including Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, Georgia, Latvia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, and Turkey.
Moldova, along with Ukraine, joined the European energy market in 2022, and the integration process is ongoing, said Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu at the meeting’s opening. Mr Junghietu also highlighted investments in cross-border infrastructure with Romania, including the construction of high-voltage power lines, alongside the development of renewable energy, such as solar and wind.
The total installed capacity had reached 784.09 MW by the end of July 2025 – up 18.21 MW from the previous month and 204.7 MW since the end of 2024. Data shows that solar installations, with a total installed capacity of 545.61 MW, are the most widespread technology, accounting for 70% of the total renewable electricity generation capacity. They are followed by wind installations, whose total capacity has reached 214.58 MW, representing 27% of the total, said Mr Junghietu.
According to the IAEA, the Chisinau meeting is part of the RER2018 technical cooperation project, which supports the development of national energy strategies and the implementation of commitments made under the Paris Agreement. The project also supports countries' national energy and climate plans and facilitates the exchange of best practices and expertise.
The project serves as a dialogue platform on key elements and challenges in formulating long-term strategies, said experts from the IAEA. They added that it also supports member states in evaluating sector development pathways and appropriate technology mixes – including nuclear energy – and facilitates the exchange of experiences, best practices and technical expertise through meetings, training sessions and expert missions.
The Chisinau event is seen as an important platform for dialogue and strengthening regional cooperation, designed to support the energy transition and efforts to reduce the impact of climate change.
