The European Parliament has reaffirmed its support for Moldova's integration into the European Union.

The message was delivered in Strasbourg by its President, Roberta Metsola, who welcomed Moldovan President Maia Sandu to the EU legislature's plenary session on Tuesday.

"You have long been a valued friend to the European Parliament, and it is a great honour to welcome you back to the House of European Democracy," Metsola said.

Ms Metsola praised Ms Sandu's courage and determination, saying they have brought Moldova closer to the EU and strengthened its democracy.

"You are an inspiration to us all and a true example of leadership. Moldova is set to take further steps on its European path, and you should know that this Parliament firmly supports you. We share the values of democracy, peace, and the rule of law. We are increasing our investment in Moldova's future through the Moldova Facility, and we look forward to opening accession negotiations with Moldova," the head of the EU legislature stated.

In her speech, Ms Metsola also highlighted the current difficulties facing the EU: "Freedoms we thought were won are now being tested. Public trust in democracy is declining, and Russia's war in Ukraine continues. But Europe is resilient, and I know that together we will overcome this crisis and emerge stronger and more united than before."

Ms Metsola also mentioned the recent visit of several European leaders to Chișinău, a signal of unity and solidarity for Moldovan citizens.

"We stand with you. We are united in our support for the Republic of Moldova and its European path toward accession," she said, addressing Ms Sandu.

Speaking at the European Parliament's plenary session on Tuesday, President Maia Sandu told MEPs that Moldova is currently facing an "unlimited hybrid war of an unprecedented scale, unseen before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine." The Russian Federation's goal, she said, is to "capture" the state by influencing election outcomes so it can be used against Ukraine.

"If our democracy cannot be protected, no democracy in Europe is safe. (...) Both Moldova and Ukraine are ready to advance with accession negotiations in a merit-based process that reflects each country's progress. Both our democracies will be safer once we are part of the Union," the Moldovan President said in Strasbourg.

This week, the European Parliament is set to debate and vote on a resolution supporting Moldova's EU accession process and strengthening its resilience against threats from the Russian Federation.
