MAI confirms: Vladimir Plahotniuc to be brought to Moldova on September 25

Former Democratic leader Vladimir Plahotniuc is expected to be extradited to the Republic of Moldova on September 25, 2025. The information was confirmed by the Minister of Internal Affairs IMAI), Daniella Misail-Nichitin, after the government meeting on Wednesday, September 10.

"This is a preliminary date for his extradition. We are currently arranging plane tickets for the team that will be traveling and ensuring that the extradition procedure is in place. We are waiting for final confirmations regarding the flight schedule. For this reason, I mentioned that September 25 is a preliminary date. Once we have all the confirmations, we will provide further updates," stated Misail-Nichitin.

The minister explained that the date was determined based on the logistical and technical conditions of the flight.

"There are specific procedures and requirements, including seating arrangements on the plane. Direct flights are necessary, which is why the options offered by airlines around the 25th were the most viable. Prior to that, no flights were available," the Minister of the Interior said.

It is important to note that Vladimir Plahotniuc was detained on July 22 in Athens while attempting to board a flight to Dubai. He is currently being held in Greece's largest prison.

In the Republic of Moldova, Plahotniuc is under investigation for four criminal cases, which include forming an organized criminal group, extensive money laundering, fraud, and involvement in bank fraud.

He faces a potential prison sentence of 8 to 15 years.
