Ex-SIS deputy director Alexandru Bălan detained 30 days in Romania

Alexandru Bălan, the former deputy head of the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS) of the Republic of Moldova, was placed under preventive arrest for 30 days, according to Romanian media reports. This court decision can be appealed. He is accused of disclosing state secrets concerning Romania to KGB officers in Belarus.
Alexandru Bălan, who was detained in Romania on September 8, was questioned by Romanian prosecutors yesterday.
On Tuesday, the Czech Republic and Poland announced the expulsion of two Belarusian agents, including a diplomat, who were allegedly part of a large intelligence network established by Belarus in Europe.
Foreign media reported that the former deputy director of the SIS in Chisinau was also involved in this network.
On Wednesday, September 10, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared an employee of the Embassy of Belarus in Chisinau persona non grata in the Republic of Moldova.
The reasons behind this decision are currently unknown. We have sought a comment from the Belarusian diplomatic mission accredited in Chisinau, but embassy officials stated that they could not comment on the situation.
