Moldova's railway gets boost from Japanese experts

Moldova's national railway company, Calea Ferată din Moldova (CFM), is set to receive technical expertise from Japan to help it develop its capacity and integrate into international logistics networks.

State Secretary for Transport, Mircea Păscăluță, met with a Japanese delegation in Chișinău on Thursday, 11 September. The delegation expressed its willingness to develop a comprehensive study to identify new export routes and capitalise on regional and international opportunities for the country's railway transport.

The project will involve 12 international experts, and a final report is expected to be presented by February 2026.

The announcement comes after Prime Minister Dorin Recean said on 10 September that the railway's revenues had tripled recently. He added that grain transport had increased by 80%, reducing truck traffic on national roads.

Outstanding salaries for the roughly 5,000 employees had been reduced from a backlog of eight months to four, and a "concrete schedule for settling all the company's debts" is already in place.

This year, the government has supported CFM with approximately 100m lei in investments and by providing the necessary diesel fuel for its operations – around 1,000 tonnes.
