Five Moldovan villages go “smart” with EU help

Five localities in the Republic of Moldova will be transformed into smart villages due to an investment of over 21 million lei from the European Union. One of these localities is the commune of Sipoteni, in Călărași district. The area will receive drinking water through the installation of four filtration stations, as well as smart public lighting. Additionally, four modern transport waiting stations will be created, equipped with panels that display real-time information.

The European Smart Village concept is being implemented for the first time in the Republic of Moldova. This pilot project aims to modernize rural communities through innovative technologies, energy efficiency, and enhanced public services.
"The first stage of this project involves the construction of a photovoltaic park with a capacity of 162 kW. This development will enable savings within the institutions under the city hall, and these savings will be reinvested in the community's development. The second part of the project consists of smaller initiatives valued at approximately 90,000 euros," says Vasile Rață, the mayor of Sipoteni commune.

The locality has previously received funding for projects from the European Union.
"The Culture House was furnished with furniture and sound equipment through the European Village initiative. Additionally, solar panels were installed on the Culture House as part of the European Village Express project. A project in the center of the village, the Family Park, has also been completed," mentions the mayor.

The locals are pleased with the changes in the commune.
“Street lighting has improved with new light poles and LED bulbs. It’s wonderful to take evening walks now. The tap water and sewage system are great; living in Sipoteni feels like heaven on earth.”
“Every year, we see positive changes. One of the latest improvements is the installation of photovoltaic panels, which provide us with our own electricity and even heating.”
“I am particularly happy that we have a city hall that is accessible to the community. The village is progressing, and I hope it continues in this direction so that we can enjoy even better living conditions.”

The localities of Larga, Coșnița, Sipoteni, Lozova, and Mereni have been chosen to implement the Smart Village pilot program. Each locality will receive grants of up to 1.5 million lei for smart projects and approximately three million lei for the construction of photovoltaic parks. These investments are part of the "EU4Resilient Moldova: Secure State, Strong Communities" project.
