EU invests in the safety of the Republic of Moldova: the rescue unit in Tomai, modernized

Improving working conditions for firefighters at the Tomai Rescue Unit in Ceadir-Lunga is underway. This station, along with nine others in the Republic of Moldova, is undergoing renovations funded by the European Union. The repair work includes replacing windows, modernizing heating systems, and upgrading rest areas.

The Rescue and Fire Department in the village of Tomai has not been renovated for decades. Currently, workers are insulating the facility and installing paving.
“We strive to do things correctly and durably, without any gaps, because the emergency vehicles are heavy and need to be able to enter, maneuver easily, and leave quickly for their destinations,” says worker Valerii Pitel.
“The heating system will also be upgraded, which is a positive development, as it will provide more comfort for our colleagues during the cold season. We will replace the gates and improve the surrounding area so that emergency vehicles can respond rapidly to requests,” says the mayor of Tomai, Dmitri Chiosea.

The unit serves four localities, and firefighters are on duty daily. They are sometimes called to assist colleagues from the units in Comrat and Ceadir-Lunga. This year, the rescuers from the Tomai station responded to 30 fires.
"There were cracks everywhere, and the paint was old—it was not well-maintained. Now it is being renovated, and it will look wonderful. This year, we have experienced many fires; we responded to incidents in forest areas as well as at landfills. This fire station is very necessary," says Victor Gargalic, a special vehicle driver.

The renovation of the Tomai rescue unit is part of the EU4Moldova project titled "Resilience: Secure State, Strong Communities." The estimated cost of the renovation is 514,000 lei, with 418,000 lei funded by the European Union.
