Kaja Kallas, the head of EU diplomacy, criticized the recent "unacceptable" intrusion of Russian drones into Romanian airspace during an attack on Ukraine that occurred the day before. She accused Moscow of engaging in a "reckless escalation," as reported by Agerpres and France Press.

“The violation of Romanian airspace by Russian drones is an unacceptable infringement on the sovereignty of an EU member state,” Kaja Kallas wrote on X.

“This reckless escalation threatens regional security. We express our solidarity with Romania,” added the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

On Saturday evening, residents in the communities near the northern part of Tulcea County, which borders Ukraine, received two extreme alert messages urging them to seek shelter in safe locations due to the detection of a Russian drone in Romanian airspace.

In response, F-16 and Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, flown by Romanian and German military pilots, monitored the area until 9:30 p.m. They were authorized to shoot down the drone, according to the source.

“The F-16 aircraft maintained intermittent contact with the drone, both visually and via radar, tracking its movement throughout. The pilots were given the authority to engage the target, but when they had direct contact, they assessed the collateral risks and decided not to open fire,” stated Colonel Corneliu Pavel, spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense.

In the press release, the Ministry of Defense once again condemned the irresponsible actions of the Russian Federation, emphasizing that they pose a new challenge to regional security and stability in the Black Sea area.
