Democracy needs to be safeguarded, and we have a chance to do so in just a few weeks during the upcoming parliamentary elections. This is the message shared by the employees of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) on International Democracy Day. Alongside patrol officers, they stopped drivers in Chisinau not to issue fines, but to provide information.

The drivers say they learned new things from the leaflets they received.

"Democracy, everyone creates it starting from home. I believe that (the Republic of Moldova n.r.) is a democratic country, but we still have work to do in this regard".

"Democracy is at a level, I can't say the highest, but satisfactory, as for those who have come out of a regime and are on the right path. We are definitely going to the elections. We have only one road, one direction, towards the European Union".

"Our voice is important, we must choose our future and that of our children. We want to move forward towards democracy, for the country to be prosperous, for our children to grow up in peace".

"Very democratic, compared to other countries, I like democracy in the Republic of Moldova. People can go out into the streets to express their wishes".

The Central Electoral Commission employees also informed people about the risks they are exposed to when they agree to sell their vote. Fines can reach up to 37.5 thousand lei.

“The experience of the last election showed that electoral corruption remains a scourge that can harm democracy but also the legitimacy of the future elected body and to this end, we have a fairly close collaboration with the General Inspectorate of Police”, said Dana Munteanu, CEC secretary:

“We urge citizens to respect road traffic regulations and not to tolerate acts of corruption. We carry out such information actions annually”, says Mihai Crivorucenco, head of the INSP.

According to the 2024 Global Democracy Index, Moldova is ranked 71st out of 167 countries and is classified as a weak democracy. Its score has slightly decreased compared to the previous year. The study also reveals that only 6.6% of the world's population lives in a fully democratic country.
