ChatGPT: How the AI is being used for personal tasks more than work

ChatGPT is increasingly being used for personal tasks rather than work. A year ago, half of all requests were for professional activities.

Today, however, only a quarter of them are work-related, according to Meduza-Live.

A new study by OpenAI, the creator of the chatbot, found that some 700 million people worldwide—10% of the world's adult population—use ChatGPT weekly.

The study concluded that people are using ChatGPT for personal matters much more often than for professional ones. Only 27% of requests were work-related, down from 47% a year ago.

The most frequent uses of the chatbot are:

Practical advice (how to do something)

Information search

Text creation and editing

These three areas account for approximately 80% of all conversations.

In nearly half of all conversations (49%), people sought information or advice. In 40% of cases, they requested a specific task, such as writing text or programming code. In 11% of interactions, they shared their opinions or emotions without requesting specific information.

The first public version of ChatGPT was launched in late 2022. OpenAI introduced a new model, ChatGPT 5, in August 2025.
