Netherlands accounts for 1.16% of Moldova’s trade, 10th among EU partners

The volume of bilateral trade with the Netherlands, the Republic of Moldova's tenth trading partner in the European Union, amounts to $ 146.3 million, which represents 1.16% of the country's total trade. The Netherlands, known as the "land of tulips", is a market for a diverse range of Moldovan products, from clothing and electrical transformers to wines, fruits and nuts.
The Netherlands ranked 16th among Moldova's trading partners worldwide and 10th among the European Union member states last year.
Compared to 2023, Moldovan-Dutch trade increased by 11.1%, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
Moldovan exports to the Netherlands totalled 51.2 million dollars last year. The increase compared to the previous year is 8.2%.
The largest share of exports is from the textile industry. Last year, the Republic of Moldova sold clothing worth $ 7.5 million to the Netherlands, representing a 20.3% increase compared to 2023.
The most significant increase, however, was recorded in the case of sunflower seed exports: 285.2% compared to the previous year. From these sales, Moldovan exporters generated revenues of $ 3.9 million.
Moldova also sells electrical transformers to the Netherlands – 5.8 million dollars, chairs and wines from fresh grapes – each worth 5 million dollars. Exports of apricots, cherries, and peaches amount to $ 3.3 million, and walnuts – $ 2.2 million.
From the Netherlands, the Republic of Moldova imports tractors, tulips, and other live plants, as well as their derivatives.
141 enterprises with Dutch capital are opened in the Republic of Moldova, with investments in the share capital amounting to 2.6 billion lei, according to data from the Public Services Agency. Among the main investors in the country, the Netherlands holds the third position.
Top 10 trading partners of the Republic of Moldova in the EU
For many years, Romania has been the Republic of Moldova's main trading partner, with the value of trade in 2024 reaching $ 2.7 billion. Germany is the country's second-largest trading partner in the European Union, with a trade volume of $ 837.5 million in 2024, followed by Italy, with trade totalling $ 716 million.
In the next positions are Poland ($509 million) and the Czech Republic ($389.1 million), followed by Bulgaria ($267 million), France ($260.4 million) and Hungary ($203.4 million). In 9th place is Spain. The volume of bilateral trade with this country amounted to 168.9 million dollars last year, which represents 1.3% of the country's total trade.
