Promo-LEX uncovers massive TikTok fake account network; trending hashtag hits 1.3M views

Promo-LEX has identified a large network of fake accounts on TikTok that are promoting misleading content during the election period. The organization reports that in just 72 hours, the hashtag #alegmoldova garnered 1.3 million views, not due to genuine support, but through a coordinated strategy.

Behind this phenomenon are 25 core accounts, which later multiplied into nearly 500 additional accounts that share the same videos and messages. Some of these accounts use profile pictures featuring traditional or national elements to create an impression of authenticity.

Promo-LEX discovered that these accounts operate with what can be described as "military discipline," utilizing only two hashtags—#alegmoldova and #moldova—to manipulate the TikTok algorithm and force their content to trend. In reality, this represents a digital disinformation operation designed to create the illusion of massive support, even though the messages originate from fabricated identities.

Narratives disseminated by the network

Among the messages being promoted are false claims linking EU accession to LGBTQ community events, attacks featuring misleading information about the government and pro-European parties, and videos of AI-generated TV presenters urging citizens to vote against Maia Sandu. Additionally, there are campaigns aimed at discrediting public officials using degrading labels.

Experts emphasize that these networks of fake accounts do not merely manipulate hashtags; they also erode trust in the online space. When it becomes difficult for people to distinguish between real and fabricated comments, they may come to believe that everything is false, which ultimately weakens democracy and electoral competition.

"Networks of fake accounts have become a more powerful tool than traditional campaign methods because they operate covertly through fabricated identities, influencing both voting behaviour and perceptions of reality," concludes Promo-LEX.

Experts predicted an increase in fake account activity as elections approach and have noted that the Republic of Moldova lacks an effective mechanism to combat online bots.
